A DIY Kitchen Overhaul for those seeking a one-of-a-kind look in kitchen cabinet refacing…

CABINET REFACING SUPPLIES | Don't Replace Reface (5)

A Timeless kitchen…

CABINET REFACING SUPPLIES | Don't Replace Reface (6)

Cabinet refacing has become big business in the last decade. Why replace the entire cabinet, when it’s only the surface you would like to replace? Why replace when you can reface? Cabinet refacing is both cheaper and, yes, more Eco-friendly than full kitchen or bathroom cabinet demolition and replacement. Kitchen renovations are among the most expensive home-improvement projects. Depending on your kitchen size and style and depending on whether you purchase stock supplies or have a custom kitchen built, purchasing new cabinets can cost up to $25,000 and even more. Image: leather kitchen cabinet door/ Leather tiles applied onto panels.

On theother hand, in most cases, cabinet refacing will cost 50 to 60 percent less than entirely replacing your kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets. EX FACTORY PRICE FOR LEATHER TILES (terracotta (above) and wenge (left) cabinet doors) IS US $140.00 SQUARE METER ((10.77 SQUARE FEET). ANY COLOR FROM THE PANTONE COLOR CHART.

Cheaper and Ecofriendlier as it may be, cabinet refacing is not a simple process. Refacing cabinets, is a process of veneering existing cabinet boxes and replacing doors and drawer fronts of your kitchen or bathroom cabinets.

Most contractors charge for cabinet facing projects. $125 to $175 per “opening”. Double doors count as two openings. Every door, drawer front and false front counts as an opening. Now, you can get 10.77 SQUARE FEET OF “CUT & PASTE LEATHER ‘SPACCATO PANELING FOR THE PRICE OF JUST ONE OPENING!

Doing it yourself can be a daunting task. Cabinet veneering is not a job to take lightly. It requires skill and know-how + the necessary equipment to prevent bubbles and other unaesthetic mistakes. Veneering is an exacting process. Wood veneer is so expensive, that you cannot afford to make mistakes.

Painting your cabinets is another option, as long as you are content with the layout of your kitchen and your cabinets are in good condition. The quality and condition of the existing cabinet materials will mostly determine the quality and durability of the paint job.

CABINET REFACING SUPPLIES | Don't Replace Reface (9)Even the highest-quality paint job can’t hide chips or cracks, fundamental structural flaws in cabinets, or cure the sins of poor kitchen design. The materials for painting (brushes, primer, paint) will cost about $250. Having a pro do the work will run at least $1,000, more if stripping is involved (the paint will inevitably peel if you don’t properly prepare the cabinet. It’s more than a one day project). You need to strip, sand, and prime beforehand, a lengthy process that may be more difficult than expected by do-it-yourselfers because of problems such as built-up grease from cooking. But what if I tell you that vertical surface refacing (cabinets, doors, walls) can be almost as easy as applying everyday, run of the mill contact paper? All you need for this project isa niceflat surface (cabinet, door, wall) our Spaccato imported leather panels (right); wall panel project fasades corner trims (large profile outside corner trim – for a clean, professional finish); metal L-Square angle ruler; heavy duty precision knife and liquid nails…

You can reface your kitchen with hand-made, custom-made, leather paneling for a fraction of the price of installing new cabinetry (1/4 of the cost of a full tear-out and custom kitchen remodel) and with virtually no waste. And unlike other cabinet refacing materials, leather takes on a remarkable character all its own. Leather gets better with age. It develops a rich natural patina which is the true mark of genuine, good quality leather. Leather is resistant to fire, that alone makes leather paneling a great material for kitchen cabinet refacing. Leather stands up to wear and tear, it’s resilient, strong and durable. Leather will outlast Plywood, MDF and particleboard (common materials used for kitchen cabinets) many times over. Read on if you want to learn more…

One main rule to qualify as a cabinet refacing candidateThe kitchen cabinet boxes have to be in “good” condition!

Please, be aware that cheap cabinets grow especially frail with old age. Although you can replace doors and drawers, widespread structural problems would render cabinets a bad bet for refinishing. Refacing doesn’t fix cabinets that are damaged by water, heat, etc, or were of shoddy quality to begin with. You would be better off replacing them. But if you like the current layout and damage seems limited to worn surfaces, cabinet refacing can be a great option. It can work miracles, especially when coupled with new cabinet hardware. The amount of money you save on re-using the bones of your kitchen helps afford more bells and whistles in the finished product.

In fact many older kitchen cabinets have full plywood construction, or solid wood, of far higher quality than what most homeowners will manage to afford in brand new kitchen cabinetry. Older boxes tend to be stronger and sturdier than newer boxes, and thus are great candidates for refacing.

Cabinets built prior to the 1980s were generally built of better materials than newer ones and were often constructed using dovetails and rabbets, not just glue and staples. Back then, 3/4-inch plywood was actually 3/4 inches thick.

It’s likely that new cabinets will be a combination of solid wood, plywood, particle board, and MDF, unless you have the budget to replace them with custom wood cabinets.

Refacing saves you time and the unexpected costs involved in replacing, which can include delivery and installation fees, repairs to walls and floors, and other charges that can more than triple the price of new cabinets. And you can stillmaintain your kitchen without having to tear everything out!

Installation of Spaccato leather paneling is very similar to applying the self adhesive covering shown on this video… Spaccato paneling need to be affixed to cabinets or doors with liquid nails though. Self-stick veneer is easy to work with but its adhesive is still strong, making the veneer hard to remove and adjust once you’ve stuck it in place. Liquid Nails Interior Projects Adhesive is usually used for paneling, it allows you to adjust the panel after placing it, which can be a plus in cases of initial mounting mistake (just be sure to measure twice and cut once), and it cleans up easily with water. Use a veneer roller, not a scraper, to force out air bubbles. Exposed leather edges can be sanded with a 600 grit sandpaper.

Each and every panel of ‘Spaccato’ leather paneling has two finished horizontal edges and requires a trim to be installed on the two vertical edges for a professional finished look. Is there an alternative to outside corner trim? Yes, you can round the edges with a #4 edge beveler (optional) and apply on the raw edges of the panels Eco-Flo Gum Tragacanth, a natural gum based edge slicking and burnishing compound, then procede to applyFiebing’s Edge Kote an edge finish to add matching color and complete the look.

Cabinet refacing usually involves ‘replacing’ certain elements. You would be able to replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts without much difficulty.
