Job Title:School Bus Driver IJob Summary:Under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor or his/her designee, within a broad framework of standard policies and procedures, transport students within designated routes and ensure safety of students while being transported; transport students for special events; perform daily inspection of the bus; operate the school bus in a safe manner at all times.Examples of DutiesOperates a school bus or other transportation vehicle within prescribed routes and time schedules as well as for field trips and special activities; escorts and assists students on and off vehicles and across streets when required or necessary; maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers; issues citations to students on safety regulations and policies related to passenger conduct; conducts safety and operations inspections of assigned vehicle daily, noting fuel and oil levels; evacuates vehicle in a safe and timely manner when necessary and conducts periodic drills as required by law; maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition; sweeps and cleans interior on a daily basis and assumes responsibility for washing bus on a weekly basis; maintains accurate records, including student counts and route cards as required; prepares routine reports as required; determines and reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary; maintains mileage and other logs as required; operates a two-way radio when needed; attends mandatory driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transporting of school children; communicates with students, parents and staff in a courteous manner; administers first aid as necessary; checks buses and other school vehicles and fills with gasoline, water, oil, battery water and air as needed on field trips; drains air tanks, checks fan belts and reports defective items; reports any suspected cases of child abuse or substance abuse to the Transportation Supervisor; participates in available training in order to meet new technology standards; participates in available training in order to meet new technology standards; perform other duties as required.Employment StandardsTraining and Experience: Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent; two years of experience operating a motor vehicle; a safe driving record in accordance with the requirements of the California Vehicle Code is required; ten hours of inservice per year is required to maintain license. Bilingualism may be required.Knowledge: Knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles transporting children; basic first aid practices; air brake systems; safe driving practices; special needs of special education students.Abilities: Ability to operate a school bus and other transportation equipment skillfully, safely and efficiently; make sound judgement in emergency situations; understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; maintain accurate records; establish and maintain proper student conduct on school vehicles; exercise good judgement and extreme caution while driving; maintain calm during stressful traffic situations; understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures and policies; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the job; establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including school personnel, student, parents and the community; maintain regular attendance. Physical Effort/Work Environment: Ability to meet minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; conduct verbal conversation in English, and other designated language; hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels); sustain constant attention to vehicle operation, and traffic and road condition while maintaining appropriate student passenger behavior for 8 hours at a time; sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk; sit for sustained period of time; climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders; push and/or pull a variety of tools, equipment and objects weighing up to 50 or more pounds; lift up to 30 pounds frequently, and 50 or more pounds occasionally; carry up to 30 pounds frequently, and 50 or more pounds occasionally; sustain heavy physical effort for 8 hours; exhibit a shoulder external rotation and internal rotation, shoulder abduction and adduction, elbow flexion and extension, shoulder extension and flexion range of motion capable of reaching and operating bus and communications controls; exhibit a full range of motion for back lateral flexion, hip flexion and extension and knee flexion; work at various elevated heights in a safe and effective manner; work with a variety of chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction; demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate two-way radio controls and conduct required vehicle inspections; work in both indoor and outdoor work environments with exposure to weather extremes which include, but are not limited to; heat, cold, rain and high humidity.Licenses and Certificates: A valid Class B-P California Operator's License and evidence of appropriate insurance is required; California Special driver's certificate issued every four years; Medical Examiner's Certificate every two years; a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate is required. Random and periodic drug and alcohol testing is required.

Training and Experience: Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent; two years of experience operating a motor vehicle; a safe driving record in accordance with the requirements of the California Vehicle Code is required. SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL RECEIVE PAID TRAINING TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED LICENSES: CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE, CLASS A OR B, WITH PASSENGER, SCHOOL BUS AND AIR BRAKE ENDORSEMENTS; CALIFORNIA SPECIAL DRIVER CERTIFICATE (DL45) WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS, EXCEPT #1 AND #6. TRAINING AVAILABLE IF CLASS A OR B LICENSE IS NOT AVAILABLE.
